Credit Tip: Safeguard your credit
There are simple steps that you can take to make sure both your card
and your credit rating stay secure. We've also included some extra precautions
to guard you from credit card fraud.
Keeping yourself safe from credit card fraud requires extra awareness
and precautions.
- Unless you initiated the phone call, never give out confidential information
(account number, Social Security number, or mother's maiden name) to
anyone who calls. Do not send credit card numbers through email. Emails
are typically not secure. Wells Fargo will not call or email to ask
you for any of this confidential information.
- Cover the keypad from view when punching in calling card or ATM numbers.
Never write your Personal Identification Number (PIN) on your card.
- Make sure you properly dispose of your account statement, any receipts
that show your credit card number, and anything containing your personal
credit information by shredding them. Or keep them under lock and key.
- Be aware of the expiration date on your credit card. If you do not
receive your reissued card before the expiration date, notify customer
service immediately. Someone may have intercepted your card in the mail.
Always sign the back of your card immediately and destroy your old card.
- Report lost or stolen cards immediately. Check periodically to make
sure you still have possession of your cards.
- Have a list of all credit and debit card numbers and company phone
numbers readily available in case your wallet is lost or stolen.
- Review your statement each month for unauthorized purchases. Be sure
to report any unauthorized charges to customer service immediately.
- If you do not receive your statement or if you receive it late, opened,
or tampered with, call customer service immediately.
- Make sure that your card is in a secure place at all times.
- Never loan your card to anyone who is not authorized on your account.
- If your state allows you the option to use a number other than your
Social Security number, such as your driver's license number, request
that the state assign you a number other than your Social Security number.
